Modified z-scores in the CDC growth charts

چکیده
The CDC growth charts contain 10 smoothed percentiles (between the 3 and 97) of BMI for 24 to 240 month-old children and adolescents [3]. These smoothed estimates were subsequently used to derive lambda (L, the power transformation to achieve normality), mu (M, mean or median) and sigma (S, coefficient of variation) parameters for Cole's LMS method [4,5]. Estimates of these 3 parameters allow the BMI of any children to be expressed as a z-score (BMIz) and percentile relative to children of the same sex and age in the CDC growth charts.

OBJECTIVE To examine the associations among several body mass index (BMI) metrics (z-scores, percent of the 95th percentile (%BMIp95) and BMI minus 95th percentile (ΔBMIp95) as calculated in the growth charts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is known that the widely used BMI z-scores (BMIz) and percentiles calculated from the growth charts can differ substantially f...

Aims: This study compares the WHO (2007) and the National Health Examination Survey (NHANES III) reference intervals and investigates the differences when applied on a Canadian cohort of older children and adolescents. Methods: We calculated height, weight and BMI z-scores of 4375 consecutive patients (1993 female, 45.6%) aged 5 20 years attending outpatient clinics at a single tertiary care ce...
متن کاملConstruction of LMS parameters for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2000 growth charts.
OBJECTIVES In 2000, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a new set of childhood growth charts for the United States. These charts included a set of smoothed percentiles along with LMS (lambda-mu-sigma) parameters to allow the calculation of other percentiles or standard deviation scores. These parameters resemble the LMS parameters derived using Cole's LMS method. Simil...
متن کاملComparison of the WHO child growth standards and the CDC 2000 growth charts.
The evaluation of child growth trajectories and the interventions designed to improve child health are highly dependent on the growth charts used. The U.S. CDC and the WHO, in May 2000 and April 2006, respectively, released new growth charts to replace the 1977 NCHS reference. The WHO charts are based for the first time on a prescriptive, prospective, international sample of infants selected to...

Preedy (ed.), Handbook of Anthropometry: Physical Measures of Human Form in Health and Disease, DOI 10.1007/978-1-4419-1788-1_2, © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2012 Abstract Percentiles and Z -scores are often used to assess anthropometric measures to help evaluate children’s growth and nutritional status. In this chapter, we fi rst compare the concepts and applications of percenti...
